4 days, 4 nights of power is how the Lexmark Indy 300 is promoted and that’s exactly what it was as the Gold Coast came alive over the weekend. Now in its 16th year, the Gold Coast event is one of Australia’s premiere motor sport attractions with plenty of action on and off the track.

With a win in the fifth and final round of the 2006 Toyo Drift Australia Series at Oran Park Raceway, Sydneysider Beau Yates became the first CAMS-awarded Australian Drift Champion. Setting the stage for a frenetic Championship battle at the final round, the top three drivers, Leighton Fine, Robbie Bolger and Yates, entered the weekend separated by 132 points in the series standings, with 500 points up for grabs.

A big weekend of racing took place at Queensland Raceway recently for Round 8 of the CAMS National Racing Championships. Classes included the ever popular Sports Sedans, Formula 3, the GT Championship and the Production Car Association of Australia including the V8 Utes.

Proof that good things come to those who wait, former World BMX Champion Luke Fink made a stunning debut in the Toyo Drift Australia Series at Symmons Plains Raceway. Going from one extreme sport to another, Fink was to have made his debut in Round 3 of the series at Eastern Creek last month, but was kept out of action due to a broken leg sustained in a BMX competition a couple of weeks beforehand.

They call him ‘The Show’, and that was certainly what Beau Yates stole in Round 3 of the Toyo Drift Australia Series at Eastern Creek Raceway. The battle for supremacy went right down to the wire and again ended with a Japanese pocket rocket up against thumping Australian muscle, as Yates in his Toyota Sprinter went up against Robbie Bolger’s 900hp Holden Monaro in the final.

When you think of big horsepower V8’s, the idea of turbo and supercharging certainly springs to mind, but diesel burning trucks? These five tonne Super Trucks are powered by 10-litre, 1200+hp diesel charged engines. The result is a mix of black smoke and burning rubber!

Mother Nature may have turned on a cold and rainy winter’s day of just 10 degrees, but that didn’t deter competitors and spectators as a strong field of 48 drivers battled for a place in the top 32 drift grid.

Mallala Motorsport Park in South Australia was the place to be over the weekend as Round One of the Toyo Drift Australia Series got under way. After two days of action, Leighton Fine piloting his Toyota AE86 Sprinter would come out on top.

Photos from Saturday’s Rhys Millen Drift Competition held at South Australia’s Mallala Raceway. The pro U.S drifter was on hand to give tips to local drifters as well as sign a few autographs.
