A Daihatsu Charade has won its class and finished equal second outright in one of the Southern Hemisphere’s most respected economy rallies.
New Zealand motoring writer Jacqui Madelin and co-driver Naomi Wiggins won the small car class of the biennial EnergyWise Rally.
Their Charade was the highest placed conventional powertrain vehicle and finished equal second outright with a hybrid Toyota Prius.
The Madelin/Wiggins Charade averaged 4.39 litres/100km (64.3 mpg) over the four days of the EnergyWise Rally 2004 from November 2 to 5.
This significantly bettered Charade’s official ADR 81/01 (Euro 3) fuel economy figure of 5.0 litres/100km (56.5 mpg).
It was Daihatsu’s second class victory in the EnergyWise Rally, after a Sirion won the up-to-1000cc category in the inaugural (2002) event.
Organisers developed the EnergyWise Rally concept as a real-world driving test in which drivers aim to better their vehicle’s official ADR 81/01 fuel consumption figures.
The event aims to show the potential fuel economy of new cars of all types, driven under real-world New Zealand conditions.
The event is an initiative of New Zealand's Motor Industry Association, with support from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, Gull Petroleum NZ Ltd and the New Zealand Automobile Association.
This year’s test loop ran from Auckland to Wellington and return, with included all manner of road types from city streets to twisting country roads.
Daihatsu Charade has a one-litre three-cylinder multi-valve engine and the choice of five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.
