Cool video, cheers for that here's some more info.
Nissan performance arm NISMO teased enthusiasts in early March with plans to infiltrate the European FIA GT Championship this year in a GT1-class R35 GT-R. Last week, that preview turned into fully-actualized race car reality on Circuit Paul Ricard in the South of France, as the team showed off its racing-spec Godzilla during Media Days and an official test session over April 6 and 7.
The supercar will run as a non-championship entry in four races in 2009 by team Gigawave MotorSport, an English outfit that's been competing in the sportscar championship since 2007, and make its debut at Silverstone on May 3. Piloting duties will be handled by accomplished hot-shoes Michael Krumm and Darren Turner and likely challengers will include Maserati MC12, Chevrolet Corvette, Saleen S7R, Ferrari F430, Porsche GT3 RSR and even Ford GT.
As rumored, the GT-R's native mid-ship twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6 VR38DETT has been supplanted by a VK-series mill, but not the SuperGT GT500-class competition motor we suggested in earlier reports. The Gigawave R35 features a front-mounted N/A V8 engine, a VK56DE, which makes a reported 600hp and more than 479 lb.-ft. of torque. It's mated to a Ricardo six-speed gearbox via a carbon triple-plate clutch, and the trans drives only the rear wheels. Carbon ceramic rotors all round are clamped by six-pot front and rear calipers, tucked behind 18x13-inch Rays forged wheels at each corner.
As NISMO indicated previously, the goal for its 2009 FIA GT program is to develop R35 racers for privateers in the series from 2010 onward. After Silverstone, the team heads to Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, Germany, for a race on June 21, the 24 Hours of Spa, Belgium, over July 25 and 26, and one additional yet-to-be-named event. We're calling our cable provider as we speak to see if we can't get the GT Championship piped into the office.
