Default The 10AE Build (and why)

    Take one stock 10th Anniversary '99 NB MX-5 - 89 kW -1000 kg wet

Add a few grand worth of Racing beat suspension to make it handle and a roll bar incase it falls over

Then take a smattering of an AVO GT-25 stage two kit -170 kW @14 psi

    and see what it does

Well lets just say I wasn't happy with low 13's

So I cranked up the boost to 18 psi

    and it went **BANG**
Stroked is fun, but I'd rather be blown

I wasn't really happy with the stock brakes so on went the braided lines bigger disks and larger calipers (SP MX-5)

With the increased diameter they should offer 50% more braking

Unfortunately when the rod let go it took out the rack, so a grand later

    Mmmm... brand newy
Mazda wanted $6k but luckily a mate had a newy sitting in his shop

    More soon

So I went looking for a replacement block and was not enjoying the prospect of paying 2 grand for something that had done 2 zillion k's.

But one of my contacts had a unrepairable write off that had done 7000 k's sitting in his shop that he wanted to get rid of, so $1000 bucks later the new mill was being stripped down

This thing was as new inside. It had been sitting in the shop for 8 years so it needed a cleanup but being so clean to start with made it easy

Off went to block, crank and head to Tony at Speedworks (full cred, nice guy, helpful and reasonably priced)

Stroked is fun, but I'd rather be blown

If you've filled it with good bits, why didnt you buy a high km cheap engine?

    6K for a rack lol

good on you for turbo'ing an MX5 that are dog slow, now the engine matches the chassis

    Nice going mate.

Do you think the driveline will handle the new power? I assume you had a clutch in it before it kicked a leg out?

A "cheap" high k long motor is 2 grand, compared to a low k motor for a grand. The math was easy It ment I could go for a M800 rather than the less than perfect M400

I so totally agree the the MX5 is slow in NA form. Mazda brought out a turbo model called the SP to improve the sluggish reputation but it didn't help much

FB, the box is an ASPIN core that the Nissan guys put 600 HP through. I do have future plans of going for a Jatco or glide and a VP rearend, but that will come when it comes.

I tried a 6 puck ceramic when it had 170 kW. I just gotta say it was a pig of a thing at the lights, really grabby. But having said that it held the torque well and never showed signs of slipping

    Cheers

    Look no ventilation

A lot of dicking around with thrust bearing material, finally ACL came to the party and supplied sheet material so all custom

Bit of a hold up with the head the springs needed shimming so while I was making them I decided to start on the inlet side of the show

The VL hose to rail injectors have a maximum flow of 320 cc which wouldn't be enough for the new configuration. I searched high and low for some decent replacements and eventually decided I would have to build a rail for it

Yep, they're 550 cc injectors as secondaries (just remember this is a 1.9 lt motor).

At full noise it will be dumping just on a litre of fuel per cylinder per minute .... I can live with that

Now to match it with oxygen

The throttle body needed to match the HP I am after and also suit the honed out inlet manifold so I looked around to see what others had done and a big fat nothing came up.

Apart from a Skunk II that is effectively a LH body and I need a right. Most of the NA guys put EF throttle bodies in. But as I'm turbo'ed I have greater space restrictions than they do so I decided to build one. It's been flowed and checked and should be good for 800 hp not that I'll be anywhere near that
