View Full Version : Need opinions on new turbo setup - RB20DET

hey guys, i've been looking around heaps over different forums trying to find some information but it seems there isn't.

i'm thinking of putting a garrett T3 from a VLT onto my RB20DET.
it seems no one has done it before, which is why i'm asking if anyone has come across someone who has done it?
what's power delivery like? max power? lag?

Dont know about the rb20, but i know of a mate who has put several t3 flanged turbos on a mazda 2.2L engine. He claims the vl standard turbo was the worst in terms of lag and took a while to hit full boost. (remember they were designed for a 3L).

Why dont you get the nissan/garrett from a r33 rb25det? Direct bolt on, no line mods, still T3 and have a large compressor. A lot of people swap the r32 for a r33 turbo with great results.

Also, why would you go for a turbo that was developed in 85-88?. They are an old design. The r32 and r33 turbos are ALL ball bearing turbos with a ceramic exhaust wheel for slightly quicker spool up. The r33 series 2 has a nylon compressor wheel whereas the series one wheel is aluminium.

because the RB20/RB25/NEO turbo's all run out of puff after 14PSI, and have a tendency to drop the ceramic wheel out the exhaust with any further boost.
also, i'll only see around 170-180rwkw with the RB25 turbo. i can push 200rwkw+ on the garrett T3.

I know you can't push them beyond 13-14 PSI as the wheels break. You didn't mention anything about not wanting to go past 14PSI.

Also all the RB20, RB25 and NEO are ALL Garrett T3 turbos too...

wat about a gt28-40? Worked really well in my bro's R33. Had a fair bit of mods too. Spools quick..!

well i want to push anywhere at or over 200rwkw.

too much lag on an RB20.
