ADELAIDE HILLS TARMAC SPRINT RALLY

29th June 2008

In an exciting precursor to the well known Classic Adelaide Rally, the Southern Districts Car Club is proud to present the 2008 asp Adelaide Hills Tarmac Sprint Rally. Held on the 29th June 2008 in the beautiful hills south of Adelaide, the event this year will also feature as Round 3 of the South Australian Rally Championship.

This is a dynamic first for rallying in Australia, having a tarmac event included as a round of a State Rally Championship.

And continuing the tradition, this year’s winner will again be crowned the CAMS South Australian Tarmac Rally Champion.

Based out of Penny’s Hill Winery in the idyllic McLaren Vale wine region, rally crews will be put to the test over 57 competitive kilometres comprising 10 special bitumen stages and a total event distance of almost 330 kilometres.

This year 2 new stages have been added to challenge the crews in and around the Mt. Compass area, with many teams using the event as a shakedown in preparation for the Classic Adelaide Rally later this year.

Spectators will have several opportunities to view the rally cars at Penny’s Hill Winery, which will act as the start and finish points, as well as the Service Park and the venue for the Presentation Dinner.

The Adelaide Hills Tarmac Sprint Rally is again proudly sponsored this year by asp – Application Service Provider Pty Ltd. With asp you can securely access your company’s applications and data from anywhere, anytime. Find out more at www.apps.com.au (http://www.apps.com.au/).

According to a spokesperson for the Southern Districts Car Club, “our aim is to provide a tarmac event that is affordable and acts as a stepping stone to other major national and international tarmac events”.

Entries are already flooding in, and with numbers restricted to a maximum of 80 crews, there seems sure to be a waiting list.

GLENNEY TO TACKLE ADELAIDE HILLS TARMAC.

Fresh from a convincing win in this year’s Targa Tasmania, South Australian Steve Glenney will contest his home town tarmac event, the 2008 asp Adelaide Hills Tarmac Sprint Rally. Held on the 29th June 2008 in the beautiful McLaren Vale wine region south of Adelaide, the event is Round 3 of the South Australian Rally Championship, with the winner also being crowned the CAMS South Australian Tarmac Rally Champion.

In the driest ever Targa Tasmania, Glenney and co-driver Bernie Webb brought their Mitsubishi EVO IX home in front of the Porsche GT2 of eight-time Targa winners Jim Richards and Barry Oliver, claiming Mitsubishi’s maiden Targa victory.

The win made an exciting Tassie double for the South Australian horse trainer, who also won Tasmania’s Rally Tasmania earlier this year.

“After our two great wins in Tassie, I’m really looking forward to tackling the sensational tarmac roads of the Adelaide Hills… it’s right in my own backyard!” explained Glenney.

Glenney will lead a strong field of 80 crews over 10 special tarmac stages in the asp Adelaide Hills Tarmac Sprint Rally, conducted again this year by the Southern Districts Car Club.

Being based around the Penny’s Hill Winery, many teams will be using the event as a shakedown for this year’s Classic Adelaide Rally with several roads being shared between the two events.

ENTRIES FILLING FAST FOR ADELAIDE HILLS TARMAC RALLY

Entries are filling fast for the 2008 asp Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally. With a maximum number of 80 crews permitted, the field is almost three quarters full of local and interstate crews who are looking forward to tackling the tight and twisty roads of the McLaren Vale wine region, south of Adelaide on Sunday June 29.

The field already includes some exotic crowd pleasers. Leading the pack is last year’s Classic Adelaide winner, Kevin Weeks in his stunning black Supaloc Racing 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera Coupe. Fresh from a
disappointing Targa Tasmania, where a blown tyre deflated his chances whilst holding second spot outright, Kevin and co-driver Bec Crunkhorne will be thrilling the local crowds as they explore the limits of the all-wheel drive V10 Gallardo.

Returning to rallying after competing and turning heads in the New South Wales’ Super Sprint Championships, is the Hiflex Australia Racing team entry of Grant Fowler and Peter McAlpine in their unique Porsche 993 Turbo S. The car is one of only seven limited release Turbo S 993’s that were built in light weight “Clubspec” configuration. According to an enthusiastic Grant, “the car was built to rally, and rally with it we certainly will!"

The twin turbo 993 engine is a direct descendant of the mighty 911 GT1 Le
Mans sports car of the late 90’s and develops around 370 kilowatts (500
bhp). With a top speed of more than 300 kph, the all-wheel drive Porsche is an exciting addition to the already extensive field which includes several
other Porsches along with a Ferrari 360 Challenge, a classic Mustang, several Escorts and the usual gaggle of Lancer Evo’s and Subaru WRX’s.

The asp Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally is round 3 of the South Australian Rally
Championship and will be run over 10 special bitumen stages on June 29, based around Penny’s Hill Winery.
