View Full Version : Drag Tyres... General Discussion..
For general discussion...
Quite often I see many people that post their qtr mile times and they quote "Street Tyres", when in fact they are Purpose built "Drag Radials"
Now I know that there are classes that accept these as "street" and they can be legal to drive on... BUT..
Are they TRUE street tyres ??
Have you ran your car consistantly on both ?? - what was the difference ??
(Personally, I have only every run my car on my full normal street tyres)

Ya this always comes up in discussions, everyone has diffrent opinions on what a street tyre is,Ive only raced on normal street tyres 235x40x18 nankangsand federals 10.3@135mph,But drag radail are a DOT approved tyre in states but dont have a load rating for australia,So then it starts getting technical of what is approved and what it is not,But in saying that they are part of the street tyre family
I think as long as its road legal its considered a street tyre.
They are 100& street legal!, they are not desinged for circuit racing, it's your choice what you want to use, for example heaps of XR6's ONLY ever uses these tyres on the street. It's no different to what Subaru sell on factory STi's, those tyres dont last long!

I drive to calder on my mt street radials with anything up to 30psi in them. They have a tread pattern and drive fine so i see them as a "street tyre"
How long they last is irrelevant.
On my 18's i have pirelli p-zero rosso tyres and there useless, the mt's are far safer and predictable on the street.

+1 I drive to and from the track on my MT streets and because most of the time I cant be assed to put my 18's back on they stay on the ute for short trips around town aswell. Its nice to be able to put your foot down and get some grip rather than just cooking the 18's up all the time.
So my 2cents says yes the are true street rubber.
Martin,
Have you run it on both tyres ??
What was the difference (time wise) ??
I have run a 9.67 @150 on BFG drag radials and a 9.95 @149 on 235/35/18 normal BFG street radial tyres, so there is an advantage:D

street tyres are anything dot approved. period.
imo biggest advantage to drag radials is consistency. with toyo t1-s's i was getting 60fts between 2.14 and 2.3. that's a huge difference at the end of the track. with the bfg drag radials i'm consistently between 2.0 and 2.1...and 2.1 is a REALLY bad launch. usually i'm hovering between 2.005 and 2.010
they have tread
they have steel belts
just because they have a softer side wall and softer compound rubber doesnt mean there not a street tyre. i drive mine all the time.
any one who considers them not street are wankers in my opinion.
opinions are what its about.
