Empire Magazine’s February issue went on sale last Friday, and they managed to interview “Terminator 4” producer Moritz Borman. During the interview, he gave an update on a few things and thanks to the mag for providing me with some quotes…you can read them below.

It seems the plan is to start shooting on April 15th in Budapest, but I wonder if that date is real. After all, the writers strike might still be going, so perhaps its April 15th assuming all negotiations get resolved.

Also, the most shocking part of the story is they got McG to film in Budapest. This is the same person who didn’t do “Superman” because it meant flying to Australia! I guess someone has conquered his fears.

Again, these quotes come directly from Empire Magazine so a thank you to them.

The Story

“We’re keeping the script under very tight security. And one of the reasons is that we have a huge twist at the end, which we’re being careful not to reveal. Like with the last Terminator — we kept that under tight wraps so not even the crew got the last six or seven pages. I can tell you this much — this is the story everybody has been waiting for. Namely, we’re in the future. The part of it where Arnold’s character has not yet been built but is on the drawing board. And in the next two episodes we’ll get to the point where time-travel is more in the foreground. It’s the war against the machines, the start of Skynet taking over the world.”

The Shoot

According to Borman, the shoot will likely start on April 15 at Budapest’s Korda Studios, using mostly interior sets and a mix of CGI and robotics. “The time period gives us a lot of space to play around with toys. The machines you’ll see are basically a generation before Arnold.” He adds: “One thing you should know is that this place now has the biggest indoor water tank in the world — it’s bigger than a football field and it’ll be ready for the time we get there.” Does this mean we should expect a watery action sequence? Have Skynet got aquatic Hunter-Killers in their arsenal?

The Director

“It’s not a rumour anymore — McG is going to direct it.” Along with most of the free-thinking world, we’re sceptical about the Charlie’s Angels director’s ability to craft a dark and smart sci-fi thriller. But Borman is convinced they’ve got the right guy: “He has a chance with this to show what he can really do, without any restraints, a completely imaginative future-world he can build.”

Arnold

Is this the last we’ve seen of the Austrian Oak model of Terminator? Not necessarily. “It’s convenient that he hasn’t been built at this point of the story, as Arnold has more important things to do right now, but that doesn’t mean he might not re-appear later in the trilogy. He knows the material and is very supportive of what we’re doing. There might even be hints of his character in this one.”

Would it be the same without Arny?

Arny would have to do a cameo at the end due the when the T800 comes into production.

Being the gov in the US he can't do any movies, but that will not stop him doing a cameo.

If they manage to fit T4 into the timeline (unlike the teleseries) then it eill be an awesome movie.

From the director

"All three Terminator films took place present day, with Terminators traveling back in time to attack. This picture takes place after Judgment Day. It happened. Everything is gone. The story of the movie is the "brink moment" Reese always talked about.

From a technical perspective, we have set out to achieve a completely new visual style that hasn't been seen before. We're shooting the film on color stock but are using a method inspired by the Oz process which was developed at Technicolor by Mike Zacharia and Bob Olson. Basically we are adding three times as much silver. It creates a surreal texture that is in keeping with the notion of the entire picture - feeling detached from the world we know today.

Every morning and every night Christian and I work on the story. Sam's contribution has been excellent. We are committed to putting the story and character first and then supplementing that with action and visual effects. It is our intention to make a film on a large scale with the nuance and subtext of a high quality independent picture.

The richness of the story is really coming out now. It's a Prometheus tale really, how creating life creates real responsibility - and if left unchecked, can be our undoing. The entire crew takes the making of this film very seriously. I made a point of hiring key personnel that are passionate about getting this right. Everyone is well versed in the mythology."

"The action of the film is set in the year 2018, eleven years before the first film's future period and thus "SkyNet is not there yet and the machines haven’t come to a point of proficiency. We see the space between the contemporary films and 2029"

"He confirms that three times as much silver is being used in the film print process, the same high levels used in classic black and white films, giving the film an interesting almost sun-drenched visual quality (think a more color-corrected and sharper "Minority Report").

The movie will also be using the earlier style T-600 Infiltrator terminator. These are the models that have rubber skin like in the Sarah Connor series.

They were mass produced humanoid battle units manufactured by Skynet from the original designs and test models constructed by Cyberdyne Systems Corporation. Standing almost six feet tall and weighing almost 800 lbs, the T-600's endoskeleton is very powerful and can lift objects almost five times its own weight or punch through concrete and metal with no damage to its reinforced servos. The T-600 Series is capable of running at a constant speed of almost 60 kph, with short bursts of up to 75 kph. However, these bursts of speed tax the servos and the joints of the leg assemblies. Due to the lack of technological advancement at the time of their conception and the nature of Skynet's logic, the T-600 Series is fabricated with a smooth latex rubber "skin" to hide its mechanics. This fact makes the T-600’s easy to recognize and thus disable.

Terminator Salvation

In this timeline, the Series 600 concept has been revised into a hulking behemoth in excess of 8 feet tall, armed with a vulcan cannon hardmounted to the right arm. However, it is still based on the human skeleton. This does not necessarily preclude an infiltration role as there would likely be variants of the T-600 for different functions, which would naturally be made in appropriate sizes. Also, a seven to eight foot tall terminator mocked-up as a human would only need to disguise itself well enough to get within firing range of a human camp, as it is very difficult to judge size from a distance
