View Full Version : Hi all newbie needs help...
Hi everyone, i might be aquiring a very clean VL sedan (non turbo) from a person at work,
it has 145,000kms, international rims, new rubber, automatic, fresh 2pac white paint, and rwc. he said he has a few extra bits at home for it inculding a recon to3 turbo unit,
now for the question of the week............. what do i have to do to bolt this baby on, i know i need a motec computer, intercooler kit ect but whewre to buy ? is the question of the day, i think i also need a boost guage, turbo timer, wast gate, boost controler, i do realize that the motor might not be able to handle the extra power but i want to have some fun and if it shits itself well so be it i will buy another block and start with a fresh rebuild... from the bottom up.. (i dont know how but i will read and try :D )
now i have an average knowledge of engines ect but not of forced induction
i am after a little fun at little expence not a 8 second car but in the future after the motor has bitten the dust i might concider doing a better job ie, atleast a 11-10 second car which i will keep savi'n for
any info would be appreciated
Cheers

Sell it. Buy a clapped out Vl Turbo andstart from there. It just aint worth the hassle. Why spend money to get it up to basic VL Turbo spec when u can buy a real one and make it better.

with that to3 it will go pretty good u shud get around 150 - 200kw at the treats but that also depends what other work you do to the motor, you can buy turbo manifolds off ebay for vls with a t4 or t3 flange for around 300 bucks but i dont recomend that, go to ur local performance car shop or mechanic and have a chat with him, they shud be able to hook you up with all the gizmos you will need and im not 100% sure but i think the to3 turbos have an internal wastegate and so on but to bolt 1 of those babys on will keep you in pocket, peice of piss to do and all the parts you need are like a trimatic gearbox, dime a dozen. give some of ur local mechanics a call and they will point u in the direction you need to go.

also on a stock block i dont recommend you up the boost about 10 psi 12 maximum but then still she might spit someing out the bottom.
thanks sexy berlina, what do you mean by a trimatic gearbox ? wont the std gear box in her work ? i hope so i have done a box change on the old mans vl wagon and i nearly cried..... 200kws at the rear is more than i am after... as i said i only want a play with a car with a turbo setup so i can learn a bit along the way or otherwise i would do what evl vlt said and buy a vl turbo. any idea on what the motec computer will cost ? i am frightened to ask LOL... it already has an inlet maniflod with it for the t3, another plenum but the bloke said to not use it as it was suspect, other than that i think i will talk to the missus and buy the baby, when i fully know what i have i can ask more questions and i will also know what i actualy have in my hand and what i need to buy..
thanks for the reply guy's and i will keep you posted...
oh and forgot to mention that the fuel pump has been upgraded to a bosch hi flow unit ? this is what he said... sounds noisy... is that normal ?
will i need injectors.. if so what type
You dont need a motec computer get a vl turbo ecu and just swap it over with yours get a standard vl turbo manifold people sell em cheap pn ebay or maybe ask wreckers. get some vl turbo injectors get a fuel regulator, intercooler. Your stock auto wont hold up to the power for long get a keas trans will be tough as nails and for safety upgrade the brakes.
ah yep good point with the brakes... i will follow that up i will start hunting down the above items asap.... what is a keas trans ? where and how much... how many horses does the stock vl turbo put out and does the stock vl turbo kill a stock wrx ?
news flash, found a vl turbo sedan auto complete only missing turbo unit, $1900 i am going to have a look see when i get 2 minutes spare...

hey mate was just talking about the trimatic gearbox as in everything for the trimatic boxes are cheap as just like stock vlt parts thats all and depending whrre ur from i know a place wherre u can get a stock vl box built up to handle around 500hp, my mrs uncle works for bob grant automatics, this is in brisbane qld tho might cost u a bit, thats where im gettin my box built up, they build all sorts of boxes if u read some street commodores mags u might see there add in there now and again, theres 1 magizine out that has a orange vk on the front they built the box for that, tough as nails, and a stocks vl box will hold up to a stock vlt you will just need to have a few minor adjustments like getting the bands done maybe stage 2 shiftkit im not really to sure watela u will need to do to it but i can definatly find out for you
yeah cool find out for me if you could.. i am in vic but am in the transport game so i can deliver and pick up ;) , hope this vl turbo turns out to be a goer....

which transport company you work for or go through??? toll, nqx?
hi mr sexy :D i work for K&S Freighters...
i went to look at the vl today, what a shit box, the only good thing i like is it has the vl turbo box, diff, computer, brakes ect.... actualy i should say it was ok but the engine bay was a mess, less turbo unit as i said but bloody hell they just yanked it out... i might buy the car so i have the vl turbo bits and buy the vl i saw for sale at work which is a very clean machine and go from there... might turn out to be a good project... now i just need to buy my own house and get my own garage to spread my tools out ;)
how much is that vl if its cheap id say go for it be easier to tidy it up then converting a n/a.
go www.keas.com.au he builds tough transmissions and is knowen to build tuff jatco boxes for vls im running one of them in mine and its a tuff as nails
the vl is $1900 cheap as but the engine concearns me... looks like it has had a hard life... but atleast everything i need (becides turbo unit) is there in one place... the rest of the car is in good condition otherwise... just not shure if i wanna take on a complete firewall to bumper rebuild..... not confident enough... looks like they just reached in and pryed the turbo off the engine.. there is shit everywhere... and not to mention WILL THE ENGINE RUN.. WILL THE G/BOX AND DIFF BE OK...
oh and are the turbo and non turbo wiring looms the same ?

looms are the same... why dont you look for a vl turbo thats got good running gear and just needs a quick respray? might work out better for you...
hi guy's sorry but i have found a car,,,, it is a 07 wrx wagon, but i do thank you all for your input and just might still buy the 2k vl i saw for sale... i will keep you all posted
once again thank you all for your support...
