I have a standard holden 253.... im looking for a cheap way to make it go a bit harder.... can anyone give me any ideas??
Pacemaker headers and a new exhaust, bigger carb (not sure on exact size but someone will) Crow Cam (call Crow they will be better able to help there)
Electronic Ignition is always a good thing, put a thermo fan on instead of the stadard HP sucking type.
Get the heads redone, better springs, vales guides, even get them ported and flowed.
Thats would be a good start anyway.
All depends on how much you want to spend. HP=$
Im sure there some peeps out there somewhere with a bigger knowledge bank then me that can help ya

a set of extractors would be good start, then a performance manifold and 4 barrel carb, a good quadrajet would be enough for a 253, check ebay they have plenty of manifold and carbs, then to look internally with a cam and set of heavy duty valve springs and electronic ignition would let rev a bet better,
that should get you started on the way to making a little extra power out of the little 4.2.......
Anything to aid in breathing will help, cam, heads, pipes, cold air intake etc
Quadies are fine for most street 8's (i seen a few flowing 830 cfm)
Put it in a Gemini!! I built one a while back for my VK and i just did and ACL rebuilt bottom end, 450hp HQ heads, Edelbrock performer, 600 vac sec holley and the cam was nothing special, about 230 @ .050 and .480 lift in/ex. Thing was making near 400hp, and it revved as well.

Twin Turbo??? :D
realistically, do most things that you can do for really cheap, such as your air intake, then fuel lines and pumps etc.. if its carbi maybe putting in bigger vacuum pipes throughout the engine will help? New sparkies, if you have an auto box scrap its balls and get a manual (better economy depending on how you drive and also more power ), exhaust.. dont get anything too big or that'll wrk against you, but not too small either.. 2 - 2.5 inch is normally best size range.. CROW cams? water injection? upgrade your rockers, oil change :P ignition upgrades, bigger earth wires for your engine ( if it has them ).. think im out of ideas for now :o
good luck ;)

could even fit some 308 injection if you where keen, would keep it reliable and maybe a bit cheaper to run too,
it all depends on how much money you are talking $1k $2k $5k?????

put scat stroker kit in it LOL. machine it up 60 make it 302. im looking at the dear side of things arnt i.
It's a 253!!!! Drive to the top of a big cliff reverse to the edge and push it out there goes one fast 253 LOL.. Then get yourself a 308.. Sorry seen heaps of people do things with 253's and well.......... If you do the bit the other say you can put them on ya 308 later anyway.. Good luck with it you will need it..
If it's just a stocker and there is a def budget in mind,, just go the extractors/4 bbl manifold/Quaddy or 465 vac sec/square 2 spreadbore adapter route and either redline twin point conversion (never had a prob with them) Mallory twin, or an electronic dizzy. And yeah, if it's got a fixed fan, swap it 4 a clutch fan or go further and get the 16" thermo.
Question is, how far do you want to go?:)
