If you really want to be safe, consider buying a physical firewall like this.

Nowadays you can get an all in one, router/firewall/modem etc...

I don't understand why people spend 1 - 3 thousand on a computer and they are too stingy to fork out 90 bucks to buy a decent firewall/internet security package to protect their computer.

1) Buy Norton Internet Security (with personal firewall and antivirus) 2006/2007
2) disable unnecessary services in windows xp
3) check your router settings, disable things like "remote telnet" or "ping from outside"
4) if you are using a pirated copy of XP make sure you turn automatic updates on and when it prompts you to download make sure you click custom.
5) download adaware and run it every month
6) download spybot search and destroy and run it once a month
7) virus scan your computer every few weeks
8) Download and install firefox and never use internet explorer ever again.

These are some things off the top of my head to keep your computer clean.

I can go into more detail if you need

avg antivirus is good but antivir antivirus is better! But the best thing they are both free! download at www.filehippo.com , firewalls are to restrictive and block to much stuff that you want to access the net with well good luck!
