Because HD supports true 1080, SD is like 720 lines.
SD will be around for quite some time yes. Blue Ray is going to take a while to get popular, the players are pricey and most of the new TV's still do not support true Blue Ray. Microsoft will be releasing a HD add on for the Xbox shortly.

yeah HD rocks i realise that but with Standard Def DVD camcorders , the video is compressed to fit on the dvd and you end up with a shitty quality / hard to cleanly edit video file compared to Mini DV tape models.
Do the HD tape cameras have a higher quality than the DVD / memory card? or is HD a totally different creature in relation to compression on these formats ?
If it does reduce the quality recording HD on dvd / memory card then why bother with HD in the first place ? wank factor ?
These cameras are desinged for a novice end user. Capturing footage onto a PC from a MinDV tape is all far too confusing for the average user, they just want to 'plug and play'.
I would assume the HD cameras still reduce quality. I dont see what the huge deal is, any footage is compressed once it ends up a on a DVD.
