- 1351 Australians have made the dream of owning an iconic sports car a reality by taking delivery of a Ford Mustang, setting a new record for what was already the country’s best-selling sports car.
- Improved supply has helped reduce waiting lists with a greater allocation for Mustangs for local dealers, enabling more owners to get behind the wheel sooner than ever.
- The Mustang has now been the best-selling sports car in Australia for 18 consecutiv
e months, with Ford Performance parts recently added to the Mustang order catalogue to reflect the desire of many owners to take their Mustang to the next level.
MELBOURNE, JUNE 5, 2017 – The Ford Mustang achieved a record Australian sales result last month, as more Australians realized the dream of parking the world’s favourite sports car in their garage. With a staggering 1351 sold, ‘Mustang May’ saw more Mustangs delivered across the nation, breaking the previous record of 786 in September 2016.
“The Mustang is a dream car for so many, for so many reasons,” said Greg Davidson, Ford Australia Sales Director. “We’re delighted to help Australians realize that dream, whether it’s a top-down Mustang convertible, an EcoBoost model or GT V8”.
The record run follows Ford Australia’s successful progress on securing more supply of Mustangs for Australian customers, which has seen the delivery times reduced. “We’ve worked incredibly hard to secure more Mustangs for those who want to realize their dream, and we’ve achieved that for 1351 customers in May,” said Davidson.
Mustang’s record month came with the great news that Australians can do more with their Mustangs than before. For Australians looking to further customize their Mustang, Ford recently introduced a range of factory-backed, fully warranted parts that can be fitted by their local dealership.
The Ford Performance parts include suspension components for improved handling and lowered stance, larger exhausts for the GT to ramp up its V8 rumble, and items such as a short-shifter for the six-speed manual. “Since its arrival here in late 2015, Mustang has become Australia’s preferred sports car,” added Davidson. “It’s far exceeded our expectations, and we have Australian enthusiast and sports car lovers to thank for this.”
A cheeky, irreverent campaign celebrating Mustang was recently launched as a call to arms for those who’ve been putting off their dreams of owing the world’s best-selling sports car. “We’ve tried to get to the core of what excites people when it comes to Mustang, and it really is a car that doesn’t fit with typical norms,” said Greg Davidson, Ford Australia Sales Director. “Mustang transcends all sorts of categories – it turns heads in our cities and towns, appeals as broadly to women as to men, and is the car of many’s dreams.”
Australia’s choice of Mustang is also unique compared to other markets. In 2015, a global analysis of Mustang sales saw Race Red as the most popular colour in China and the UK, while Black was the most popular choice in the USA. Australians have made Race Red their pick, too, with the Fastback body style chosen more often than the convertible. Following the classic Mustang formula, the GT model with its V8 is the firm favourite, despite sales of the EcoBoost Mustang growing 41% so far in 2017.
In early 2016, Ford announced that Mustang will extend its technological leadership role beyond the current EcoBoost version, with confirmation that a Hybrid Ford Mustang is in development. This will underline Mustang as not only an icon of motoring history, but as a vehicle that has evolved and developed with the times and changing taste of sports car consumers.
