The City of Ipswich Winternationals 2016 saw the professional classes commence qualifying on Friday. Wayne Daley topped the sheets in Pro Stock with a clean 7.004 at 192mph. In Pro Alcohol John Canulli returned after the massive wheelstand at Easter with an exceptionally quick 5.358 at 256mph pass to lead Jon Sting’s 5.549 at 246mph.
In Pro Slammer, local racer Russell Pavey unfortunately collected the wall after launching hard, getting crossed up and switching lanes, but was able to exit from his HB Body-sponsored Corvette safely. We wish Russ well! Victor Bray clocked a very nice 5.997 at 234mph showing there is life in the old girl yet! Andrew Searle made a welcome return to the slammer ranks in his clean ACME Composite Supply 1967 Mustang. John Zappia topped the time sheets with a 5.825 at 247mph.
Top Fuel saw a great side-by-side pass with Peter Xiberras and the Premiair Racing Top Fueller clocking a 4.848 at 250mph beside Darren Morgan’s AEG Powertools 4.648 at 315mph. The Rapisarda team saw some shake and wheelspin for the USA’s Larry Dixon and Wayne Newby, but Damien Harris was second qualifier with a 4.791 at 245mph with a small explosion at the top end giving the team a little bit of work to get ready for Saturday.
